The e-publishers seem to have taken this: The Works of Saint Augustine, added this: St. Augustine of Hippo: Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount According to Matthew & The Harmony of the Gospels (admittedly a valuable addition), and lowered the price. So far so good. But why why why call it the Complete Works? One can only dream that someday someone will make a Kindle version of the following very interesting works (a partial list):1. De Ordine, De Beata Vita and Contra Academicos- three dialogues from the time of A's conversion, available here: Writings of Saint Augustine, Volume 1 (Fathers of the Church)2. On True Religion and On the Teacher, included in Augustine: Earlier Writings (Library of Christian Classics)3. The Retractions: A's own account of everything he wrote:Fathers of the Church: Saint Augustine : The Retractions4. Against Julian, the longest (and much mis-characterized) anti-Pelagian work: Against Julian (The Fathers of the Church, Vol. 35)In short, a fine compendium with an absurdly pretentious title. One star penalty.
This is an amazing compilation. >550 hours of reading for 2$ -- what a deal! The quality of the translation and editing is excellent. I have yet to find a single OCR error which is delightfully refreshing; there's only a rare word now and then with an extra space in it.The content is surprisingly easy to understand and uncannily applicable to today's culture and time. As the moral decay of America accelerates, our society is becoming more and more like that of the ancient Roman world and Augustine's comments are becoming more, not less, applicable. Augustine addresses perennial questions such as why God lets good people suffer and why God allows non-Christian governments to rise to power. Augustine speaks into a world of moral decay and hostility to Christianity with refreshing, unapologetic candor and brilliance. He is an intelligent and amazingly well-read apologist for the Christian faith. I am so grateful to the editors and translators for making this timeless trove of wisdom available to us practically free.I am also learning a lot about the culture and times of Augustine "for free" since it's embedded in his discussions. Sometimes shocking, always interesting, this is NOT the Roman history you learn in k-12 education. Augustine also has a fascinating perspective on the philosophical giants of the past (e.g., Plato) to whom he is much closer in time and culture. Also quite different from the secular, post modern interpretation usually taught today. The format is easy to read with most chapters being less than 2 pages. The size of the document does make my Kindle run a bit slow though, particularly when underlining and taking notes. I'm curious if the Kindle Fire or other more powerful tablets have a similar issue.I haven't finished City of God yet, but I've already gotten my money's worth out of this purchase. I Can't wait to finish it.
I don't know if this was a download malfunction or not, but I got this. Table of contents button did not work on the "go to" menu. The only thing I could do was hit "go to beginning" where I was able to see the first works, and those links worked, but after the 10th item the next page after table of contents it went right to the start of "the City of God".I haven't found the other "table of content" pages, I presume the next one starts after the tractates on the gospel of John, but I didn't look that far. Its a lot a lot of page turning I didn't have the patience for.I'm sure its great material, but with this many things in one ebook, a good table of contents is mandatory.Returning this one for the other 3 dollar version.
Have had Confessions on my reading list for years, finally got it started. It is interesting as it is a foundational document for Christian Doctrine. Plus it is a personal recollection of Augustine's life in the late 300's AD. I always find it fascinating how much life is the same mo matter when and how much is changed. This translation is easy reading.
This is why I love my Kindle. I have 46 wonderful books all in one file and it might just take me the rest of my life to get through them. But how much fun that will be! I've started on his "Confessions" and am already fascinated. I can hardly wait for the other 45...
It is a great advantage to have this classic material in such an accessable form and to have such ready recourse to so great a thinker and writer.
I've read his works in other forms throughout the years, but how great to have all of them in one volume. Super easy to research subjects and of course this is St. Augustine so every thought is an intellectually stimulating gem. If you are new to spiritual works, start with his Confessions.
Oh, Lord, let me read the complete works of St. Augustine . . . but not yet.
