This volume does not contain St. Robert Bellarmine's Marian writings "from his commentary on the seven last words of Christ. These have already been translated into English and published in a volume entitled The Seven Words: Spoken by Christ on the Cross". Here St. Robert Bellarmine presents a series of technical challenges and precise rebuttals re the exalted place of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Roman Catholic economy of salvation. Those who have read the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas will be familiar with this approach: Bellarmine sequentially and orderly marshals a combination of Scripture, doctors of the church, Thomistic logic, and theology to examine and defend the divine prerogatives of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The second half of the book is composed of very brief sermons on Mary.These writings predate Pope Pius IX's apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus, which formally promulgated the de fide dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and they are extracts removed from context; that is, there is lack of a gravitational center around which this constellation of Bellarmine's texts may revolve, which perhaps may explain why this volume falls short of Bellarmine's customary genius, why it is so less engaging and much less edifying than, say, his On the Roman Pontiff (De Controversiis) (Volume 1).See also Bishop
