I met Peter D. Snow at the Northwest Booksellers Association Trade Show. I was impressed by his gentle spirit and passion for his subject. It shows in this book!Peter opens up a whole new dimension to the teachings of Jesus. He projects a persona of Jesus' character that I found believable and comforting. Peter made it possible for me to experience the character of Jesus in a way that stories in the Gospels do not.I found two additional aspects of Jesus, Man not Myth rewarding. The first was the relationship between the different religious and spiritual factions at work that led to Jesus' death. Of particular interest to me were the roles Annas, Caiaphas, and Pilot played in Jesus' crucifixion. The second was the insight of the importance of sacrifice to the Jewish Temple and how Jesus' teaching was a threat to the wealth that the priests derived from this practice. One last comment. A difficult task in writing is to make dialog sound authentic when the goal is to introduce historical facts and concepts. Peter does a good job at this, though at times such dialog does sound a little contrived. Good job, Peter.
Fr. Snow paints the world Jesus lived in - the poor, sick, and those who were despised; a brutal Roman occupation, and a religious leadership that concentrates on the minutiae of the Law, but has lost the spirit. He makes us aware of the differences between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and introduces us to the Essenes, who are beginning their own way of serving God, and may have attracted Jesus. As the pages turn, we find Jesus gradually developing his mission and attracting followers a little at a time. At all times, Jesus promotes the spirit of the Law, but ultimately, knowing that an armed revolution would only put another regime in place, Jesus accepts that he must die, but his work will go on. It leaves me thinking that Jesus looked around his broken world as we look around ours, knowing that love is the only cure for warring madness, and the only treasure worth having.
Thanks, Peter. You brought Jesus to life as a real person, facing the same issues and challenges we face everyday. You pulled the human Jesus out of the religious box we put him in, and you showed the human trials he went through. You also showed the devine Jesus as we can know Him today. Best novel I've read for years, and only novel that will change how I read the New Testament!
It took a couple of chapters before I really got into it but then I was hooked. It gives real insight into Jesus as just a man. As a novel it gives Peter a little leway but the book moved me as no other book has. To be able to look into the mind of Annas and his motives was interesting. I highly recommend it.
Great Book. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to know the real man Jesus. I was truly blessed by reading this down to earth take on how Jesus may have been.
Finally a book about Jesus told from a historical perspective that stays true to the gospel. Reverend Snow takes us on a journey into the life of Jesus, his apostles and the historical period they lived in. While reading I found myself thinking deeply about Jesus as a truly accessible being, especially through the intimate conversations with his disciples and their followers. Rarely do you find a book that so fully envelopes you in the story, I developed a much clearer vision of the man Jesus is, where he preached and the forces that existed all around him. Pick up Reverend Snow's book and set out on the path with Jesus and his followers.
