Ebooks Online

What would happen if you were to stop on the street and ask ten people, "Who started Christianity?" You probably hear people give you the same quick response: Jesus.  But those ten people would be wrong. Jesus wasn't a Christian. Jesus lived and died as a Jew. Understanding the Jewishness of Jesus is the secret to knowing him better and understanding his message in the twenty-first century.Walking through Jesus' life from birth to death, Rabbi Evan Moffic serves as a tour guide to give Christians a new way to look at familiar teachings and practices that are rooted in the Jewish faith and can illuminate our lives today. Among the critically acclaimed highlights of this book, Rabbi Moffic * Gives fresh insight on how Jesus' contemporaries understood him * Explores how Jesus' Jewishness shaped him * Offers a compelling new perspective on the Lord's Prayer that will forever change the way you experience these powerful words * Provides renewed appreciation for Jesus' miracles. In encountering Rabbi Jesus and understanding his Jewish heritage, you will see Jesus differently, gain a better understanding of his message, and enrich your own faith. Victor Hugo once said "All the forces in the world are not as powerful as an idea whose time has come." First of all, let me make clear that I admire the author for approaching Jesus and Christianity with such respect. I salute him for trying to establish an environment for a healthy exchange of ideas between Christians and Jews, and I believe he did a great job at that.About the book itself, I have to say that I was a little disappointed. The author takes several passages from the gospels and give his interpretation to them, claiming to be based on how a Jew in the first century would interpret those events or those words from Jesus (in his opinion). However, it is obvious that he doesn’t see those passages as a Christian would, and he does interpret them from the Jewish point of view (as in, trying to show how Christians got some things wrong).Don’t get me wrong, it is not a bad book, but the title misled me. I wish it was titled “How a Jew in the first century would interpret Jesus’s life” or something like that. Even so, I have to emphasize that those are the interpretations from the author, not necessarily from the first century Jews, because we have Paul’s letters in the New Testament that show how another Jew (and a very well educated one) from the first century disagrees with many of the author’s interpretations. Actually, we have many other epistles and the gospel accounts themselves that show us different interpretations than what the author offers (and they were all written by first century Jews). Also, due to the fact that the author’s interpretation doesn’t agree with the traditional Christian interpretation on most of the events, it might confuse a new Christian or a Christian that doesn’t know much about the traditional interpretation of the events that the author explains.
