If you know what a mountain looks like than you have seen the basic shape of the volcano. A volcano is essentially a mountain that has developed as a result of its eruptions. When the magma spews up in the form of lava and covers the mountain it adds to the growth. Magma is "a molten, or melted, rock under the Earth's surface." Many people live near active volcanos. For example there is one near Mexico City in Popocatépetl. There are advantages and disadvantages of living near one and this book discusses them. It also discusses the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State. The crater it left behind was "nearly 1 mile (1.6 km) wide and 2,500 feet (762m) deep." It was a North American record breaker! There are many different kinds of volcanos . . . large, small, active, inactive, sporadically active, some on land, some under the sea. There are also many "different kinds of volcanic eruptions." The type that have "fluid lava flows," but do not explode eventually take on a low "broad, rounded" shape. These are called "shield volcanoes" and tend to be some of the largest on Earth. The three other kinds are the cinder cone, the stratovolcanoes, and the Caldera volcanoes. In this book you will learn about the reasons volcanoes erupt, how their gases can harm the atmosphere, the rock magma forms when it cools, oceanic volcanoes, life forms that live near oceanic volcanoes, unusual volcanic eruptions, and much more! This is a very well researched and thorough book on volcanoes and their effect on the planet. I liked the way the information about volcanoes was presented without being overly alarmist. The many sidebars had some very interesting information.
