The book is severely outdated, many of the items, concept, and pictures no longer exist in the 21st century, LOL - the book has a date of 1976 with and revision in 1991, but it appears to be still stuck in the '70's. I do not recommend this for children at all as a beginning English book because it is impractical attempt to teach them objects, and outdated pictures, they would encounter in museums and not in everyday usage and conversation, which the publisher claims as a target usage.
this book has beautiful pictures with lots of everyday words. the book is divided into sections of common situations like at the store, at the doctor's office, etc. I think it is very helpful for English learners. you can also be creative and use it to teach a different language if you are bilingual. you can write the other language under English words and use the book as teaching aid. that is what I did to teach my son Russian. I could not find a good Russian picture dictionary, so I made my own out of this book!
Nice big colorful pictures of every day places (cartoon style drawings), classroom, yard, outer space, city, etc with individual objects off to the side, identified in English; plus colors, shapes and numbers to 100. This has been very useful with my ESL tutoring of 5-year olds. Especially as they are starting to read more, but even useful when they could not. Highly recommend.
My program has purchased over 30 copies of this dictionary for students in our Adult ESL classes. The book is a very effective learning resource. Our students love it!
This has been a super useful dictionary for my emerging readers and spellers (native English speaking children). One of my kids' favorite things is to use this book with the Scribblenauts app. I think it's a great tool to foster independent, self-directed learning. It empowers even a young child to be able to find the answer on his/her own. I like how the words are grouped in context next to the picture. Picture dictionaries that put the words in alphabetical order are not super useful to people just learning to read and/or spell. In this dictionary the child can flip through the book, look at the pictures to find the correct context, and then skim the photo/word list for the word he is trying to write.
This book is not for anyone learning Spanish. Also the reader must be old enough to understand what the picture is, and know the Spanish word for the object. Example, In the Doctor area there is a stethoscope, thus you must know what it is to begin with. Thus mot good for the very young.However, I reside in Costa Rica, and although I purchased this book for 2 young children, their Grandmother. and Aunts and Uncles love it!
This taught me English very very well I am so I pleased that I know English now!
English is my second language so I wanted to improve my vocabulary but regular dictionaries / thesaurus are boring. I started with the latest and read them only once or twice. This book is totally different. It's fun to read and you end up taking full advantage of your investment which by the way is so low. I know the target objective are kids but for me it worked great. Awesome!
