Children's' books author Kally Mayer works as a Youth worker with special needs children and accompanies this schedule as a writer of books that are meant to entertain while teaching children the rules of the road. Illustrator Mindy Liang provides the colorful visuals for this fun book. Kally has 3 children and two grandchildren which has inspired her to publish books for younger children. Kally believes that literacy is an important indicator of the success of your child and entertaining them while reading is key.Mommy sleeps in - doesn't hear the rooster crow or the birdie's song or the alarm clock - and when she does awaken she panics, rushes around, has problems dressing herself and her children, spills the dog food while trying to feed him, has no time to clean the slime form the fish bowl, calls the school to say her children will be late, drops her cell phone when the dog needs to go out, spills coffee in the car and gets a policeman's ticket, forgot to pack her children's lunch bags, was late to work, gets called into her boss' office - and her boss says she needs a break day! She is happy, but in dancing a gig she bangs her head, and goes home to soak in the tub, cleans up, and goes to school to pick up her children and take them home - stopping for a treat on the way. Once home she helps the children with their homework and everyone is happy. She tells her children to never get frustrated because something good is bound to make things better - like all the fun she gave her family for sleeping in!This is a fun, rhyming story with excellent illustrations - a sure winner for bedtime treats - and lessons! Have you ever been late, slept too long, or forgot to get up? Sometimes this happens to us all.Kally Mayer, the author, has written a fun book that will lead to laughter and good times. It may ring a bell. One day mommy slept in, her alarm clock did not go off, and all sorts of things went wrong, and her children wondered what was wrong. Since they were so far behind when she did get up, many things did not go right. In fact, mommy went to work in her pajamas,Parents/teachers will enjoy reading this book to their children. The children will laugh and laugh at the funny things that occur because mommy slept in. It put the entire family behind for the day. Mommy must have been very tired, indeed. The illustrations by Mindy Liang are bright, colorful and vivid. They depict all the adventures of mommy and her two children. One if the best parts of this story is that it is written in rhyme. Children love hearing stories in rhyme, and adults enjoy reading books in rhyme. The lilting, lyrical sounds are so restful. The other important part of this book is that it has lessons learned. This is a very important way for children to learn. I enjoyed this story and its lessons. Note: a complimentary copy of this book was provided to read and review.Recommended. prisrob 03-11-15
As a busy working mother I really related to this book. So many kids books portray mothers as stay-at-home and that's just not the reality for so many of us these days (if it ever was the reality) so thank you Kally Mayer for 'normalising' that. I can so relate to the depiction of morning chaos - again a reality for so many families. Kids will love the moment when Mommy steps in doggy doo and parents will relate to the mounting issues of a morning gone terribly, horribly wrong. Although children from two parent families probably won't notice it, this Mommy appears to be a single Mom. There aren't a lot of books that depict single Moms and what I liked about it was that it isn't portrayed as an issue, it's just a sideline. So many kids grow up in single parent families and books like this de-stigmatize having a differnt household. The bold and vibrant illustrations looked great on my ipad. The language is simple and suitable for early readers.
This cute little book is the third one I have read by this author, and another hit with my daughters, ages 4 and 2. The mom, a hard working woman who takes care of her family and works outside the home, doesn't hear the alarm one morning, staring off a day of mishaps, troubles and angst. Luckily for all involved, the day does turn around resulting in fond memories for the children and a valuable lesson for the readers.Pros: It is nicely illustrated and the lesson is delivered in a way any child can understand, even a toddler as young as 2. The rhyming stanzas are easy to read and slip off the tongue with few stumbles.Cons: Maybe it is just me, but my brain edited the text as I went along, inserting connecting words that made the narrative smoother. While I truly enjoyed this book and I believe it can be an asset to your growing children's ebook library, I would have left out a page or two and reworded some of the text - but again, maybe that is just me.Conclusion: My daughters find a book that they love and request it to be read every night till one or both lose interest. As of this writing, we are going on 5 nights of requests, I'd call that a win - and a buy.
This is a very cute and funny book about a Mommy who sleeps in and all the disasters that happen because of it. The kids have the wrong clothes, she spills coffee on herself, then gets pulled over on the way to work. Anybody who has ever had a day when they feel like they shouldn't have gotten out of bed will be able to relate. Things all work out in the end and a lesson about not overworking yourself lies in the writing. I highly recommend it.
