I don't think they did a very good job retelling this story. It's been simplified tremendously, but it's really gutted the story completely, leaving large gaps in it. Even the 3 year old got confused by this tale.
This book, along with others of the author's childrens books, are very good for kindergarten students. My husband and I are "Reading Buddies" to several kindergarten children at a school in our hometown. The children love for us to read the books to them.
My daughter is into fairy tales these days. I loved that the royal family in the book were people of color. I thought some of the words might be too hard for her to understand but I went ahead and read it as is, and she seems to get it just fine. Short and sweet.
I shared this fairy tale with a Spanish individual who was unfamiliar with the story. He loved it immensely. What is good about it is that it is written in both English and Spanish.
One of the very favorite bedtime books of all our grandchildren. The artwork is really good also. Now, they read it to us!
A much shorter version of the original story, it was okay, more emphasis on they prince than the princess and the pea.
