I am, impatiently, waiting for this series. So grateful the Kindlized version comes out so much faster than the hardbound copies. I am waiting to see what happens after the anime ended since the second season was crap. The characters are intriguing, the plot is well thought out, and the story flows well. There is so much more to the books than the anime, so I recommend checking out both, just because they are both good in their own rights.
Volume 5 completes "The Gourmet" arc, adds a chapter giving Rize's backstory, and then begins a new arc about the Ghoul Investigators (introducing Juzo Suzuya). Sui enjoys juxtaposing the viciousness of the ghouls against what now looks to be similarly disturbing CCG. But at the same time, we're given more insight into touka's impressive Kagune.Story: The Gourmet has taken a morbid interest in Kaneki - a rare treat he has saved from the restaurant in volume 4. He sets the perfect dinner - trapping both Kaneki and Nishio. Touka's sudden appearance throws off his plans. But will ghouls who won't feed on human flesh have enough power to stop the gourmet from killing them all? At the same time, the ghoul hunters recognize a serious problem in Ward 11 - now that there are no fighters left against the ghouls. Headquarters sends in the big guns - a really nasty piece of work named Juzo Suzuya and his partner, Shinohara. This volume may not have quite the kicks of the first four but including a chapter on Rize's backstory was a great addition. It leads up to the period in which she meets Kaneki but also helps bring more of the reasons behind the 11th Ward situation (and the sudden heightened interest in Kaneki's Ward by the CCG). Kaneki learns a bit more about Rize but clearly he still has a long way to go before understanding his 'progenitor'.The battle in the church was well done, especially since we get more on Touka's abilities. For once, Kaneki is pretty much out of the picture and it is Nishio and Touka who have to put a period on The Gourmet. Tsukiyama is suitably menacing and has quite the kagune himself. In all, still scary but also still fascinating. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
Brilliant! I'm reading a couple of horror series right now and this is my favourite one. Rated T+ its got just the right amount of darkness and gore (mostly consisting of decapitations and limb removals) and has a great story line. In fact several are going on at the same time, this volume closes The Gourmet arc and does a lot of character development on Kimi, Touka and especially Nishio taking us on a flashback to his past. We also go on a flashback to learn more about Rize. Meanwhile, the investigators are upping their presence on all the killings going on and Amon is made part of an exclusive team while the book ends with the introduction of a really weird new Special Investigator. This should prove interesting! I have to say I really enjoy reading Viz's Signature line too. These are quality books and I love the slightly larger format.
This volume was great! The majority of it is spent on an epic fight scene, but there is still bits and pieces of the story thrown in there as well. I found myself slightly confused at who some of the characters were, but overall it was a great addition to the series. We get introduced to a pretty creepy character towards the end too. I can't wait for the next volume!
This is probably the best series that I have ever read. I am caught up with Tokyo Ghoul:re (the sequel to Tokyo Ghoul, takes place 3 years after the series ends), and I have to say it gets even better. I personally cannot wait until it releases. If you like the anime, read the manga and you will probably no longer like the anime just because so much is left out.
To make things simple, if you've liked Tokyo Ghoul so far, you're going to like this volume. The Gourmet Arc is resolved in this volume, and some very touching scenes fleshing out Nishiki and Kimi are present. The climax of that arc is also fantastic for Touka fans. Not only are there some beautiful character moments for her highlighting her softer side, but her combat competence is demonstrated in a spectacular way. In my opinion, most of Touka's finest action girl moments are in this volume. After the Gourmet Arc is resolved, the rest is aftermath and a side story about Rize's past. I didn't feel that the Rize story brought anything special, but the space between the Gourmet and Aogiri Arcs is filled with great scenes. Amon is back! And two major CCG characters are introduced at the end of this volume, a hard-working everyman and the troublesome partner Shinohara mentioned in volume 3. Anyone who doesn't already know about that character should definitely get this volume right away... It's very worth your while to understand exactly how the CCG is run. Overall, it's a fast-paced and fun read with good characterization and cute bonus comics at the end.
I pre-ordered it and it arrived as said. I have already collect Part 1 of TG in japanese. And now I am slowly collecting the rest. It came in great condition. This volume focus on the information about Rize, but then again readers will know only what Kaneki knows.
