The Message Of Colossians And Philemon: Fullness And Freedom (Bible Speaks Today)
Ebooks Online

Sometimes we try to add to the gospel our own recipe for spiritual fullness. Paul claims that all God's riches are to be found in Christ alone. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book was recommended to me by our Pastor that had the author as a professor in seminary. The content is good but very wordy - there is a chapter covering approx every 3-7 verses! We bought it as a refrence in order to lead a home group bible study on Colossians, but I have to say I don't end up using it as much as I thought because it takes too long to prepare the lesson that way. There are some very good, thought provoking, conversation starter questions in the back that you can pick and choose through.

The Bible Speaks Today is a very strong and helpful commentary series but this book is definitely one of the less stellar of the set. The strength of this book along with others in the series is: that it is easy to comprehend, doesn't get overly lost in the minutiae of the text and takes the reader from text to application. Yet I found the weaknesses of this commentary outweighing its strengths. The writer doesn't always take the text in verse order so if you are reading through Colossians or Philemon verse by verse you will have to jump around a little bit in the commentary. Honestly, this frustrated me as I was working through Colossians verse by verse and often had to hunt around for where he dealt with the next verse. Also, I felt that the writer occasionally went on rabbit trails which seemed to have little to do with the text or the theme of the passage. Further, he often seemed to raise more questions then he answered in the brevity which he covered things and too quickly moved from the text to more thematic issues.Instead of this commentary I would recommend NT Wright's commentary in the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series as a superior offering while being equally easy to comprehend.

I have some mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, the quality of the commentary on the text is quite good. It is, of course, British, and now 32 years old (the fact that it is British means the discussion of slavery in Philemon will be different than from an American perspective). But the comments are still worthwhile, and occasionally quite insightful. This would make an excellent reading commentary for individual use or for help in leading a bible study. On the other hand, I bought this book primarily for the Philemon notes, and I was a bit disappointed. (I suppose I should have read the other reviews!) The notes on Philemon are only eight pages long. There is some good insight in those eight pages, but it is still hard to avoid feeling a bit shortchanged. No doubt Lucas could have delivered significantly more insight that he did. The Philemon notes have a nice devotional quality to them, but if you are looking for help on the issues of the book, I would look elsewhere.

Will be part of my new testament library I am putting together

The book is so accurate. A great study companion
