A mere 30 day journey with this book as a navigational guide and one will find not only conviction but encouragement for one's own "mission field" in life. Through the many personal trials, challenges, and victories of the author will shed new light on just what may define the term "missions or missionaries". This devotional is, just as it says, not your ordinary devotional. It offers reasonable and doable simple acts of kindness that can be carried out each and every day by the least of people to the greatest of people, people just loving and caring for their family, friends, neighbors and strangers.
this book really inspired me into the practical things i can do when i see a homeless and to have an open, understanding heart for their unfortunate circumstances.
This book makes you take a new look at those individuals that are homeless and how God calls us to serve them.
I thought this would be just another generic christian tale but what these two young men learned about themselves and their faith was truly inspiring. It was a real eye opener to learn that not all churces are "christian" and open to love for all (homeless people)
One of the most impacting books I have read on Christianity in practice! I have recommended it to numerous friends who want to know what Christianity really looks like both in and outside the church. Mike Yankoski is truly gifted and his transparency was refreshing!
This book is awesome. Eye opening. Must read for the entire nation. They should make this book a "Must Read" for Junior High School aged kids. It would really help open your eyes to the world.
I normally don't like `devotional books', but because I so thoroughly enjoyed Under the Overpass, I bought this book, and was pleasantly surprised. With the same engaging style as in the book, Yankoski manages to make us think, and then when we're in the frame of mind to do something about what God has put on our hearts, he asks the questions that should lead us to an idea of what we can do. By the way, what we can do for the hungry and homeless doesn't always involve money, and sometimes the fact that you're willing to show you care by giving of your time means as much or more than a $20.00 bill. After each week of daily devotions, there is an opportunity to reflect in writing on some of the simple questions that we might have been asking all along. This book isn't quite as powerful as the book it's based on, but it still is one of those books that makes you think, and forces you to toss away some of the pre-conceived ideas and baggage that might come to mind when you see a homeless person, or a beggar on the street.I wasn't paid for reviewing this book.
This has got to be one of the best books I have ever read. He talks about how he set himself up for living as the homeless and how he walked the walk among them. He did not secure resource he actually lived their life. He panhandled had someone steal his food, he ate at shelters and even went days without food. He tells us what it is like sleeping on concrete in the rain and what it really feels like.He explains the good and the bad how they bond together to help one another and how some treat them like they don't deserve to live. He tells us how people tell him to go get a job, when some are to sick to work. He tells us about the drug and alcohol use by some. He also tells us about the families that have faced hard times and had no choice but to become homeless. This is a devotional. He helps us learn how to pray for the homeless and shows us how to step out of our shell and shows us how we can help. He challenges to help in the ways we can. Not by asking for money but for true help for our local homeless.
