The Book of Concord or Concordia is the doctrinal standard of the Lutheran Church. It is composed of ten documents, each of which has been recognized as authoritative in Lutheranism since at least the 16th century. (The Three Ecumenical Creeds, The Augsburg Confession, The Apology of the Augsburg Confession, The Smalcald Articles, A Treatise of the Power and Primacy of the Pope, Luther's Small and large Catechisms, and The Formula of Concord.) They are also known as the symbolical books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, or the Lutheran Confessions. The Book of Concord was published in German on June 25, 1580 in Dresden; this date was chosen to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession to Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg.This Concordia Triglotta edition was published in 1917 "as a Memorial of the Quadricentenary Jubilee of the Reformation anno Domini 1921 by resolution of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States," (which later became the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod).

In a couple of weeks I will be meeting to discuss overtures submitted to a convention committee on theological matters. I want to travel light and take only my Kindle, if possible. I already have a full Bible in biblical Greek and the Hebrew Old Testament with glossary on my Kindle, as well as a couple of English versions. I am very familiar with the 1923 English text of the Concordia Triglotta after listening through an audio recording of it a few times, so I do not find the prose especially archaic. My big concern was ease of navigation for this version on my Kindle Touch, but that is not a problem. I can easily use the Menu and Go To in order to get to the Table of Contents. Each section of the Triglotta text is linked and I can get to it quickly. The price is very good, too.
Pros: The complete English text of the Triglotta edition, a detailed table of contents which includes the sections and subsections of each work (e.g. the 1st Commandment in the Large Catechism; the Reader's Edition published by CPH doesn't have this kind of navigation)Cons: The Latin and German text are nowhere to be seen (this is more accurately, "The English Text from the Book of Concord--Concordia Triglotta Edition")
The language is dated, but it's really less difficult than reading KJV Bible. After all, the English is only about 100 years old. The "go to" granularity is good. I read reviews on the Readers Edition that said you couldn't "go to" the section numbers of the different documents, and with this version you can. I use this on my tablet in conjunction with the "PrayNow" app for Android. After my daily devotion, then I read the suggested Book of Concord article.
This is a heavy read, but it's good theology to study. I recommend reading it after you've watched the movie Luther. You'll understand better the documents that Luther and the other reformers were so passionate about.
it breathes Christ Crucified. It can be used devotionally. try doing that with the westminster confessions or heidelberg catechism! The central thread is to give comfort and assurance, in Christ, to the troubled conscience.Reformed , in order to read this book need to first focus on the Augsburg Confessions, Apology, and catechisms.And they need to see those writings as the Lutheran response to St Thomas Aquinas and the Roman Scholastics. The common point of discussion that the Lutherans select is the conceptual framework of Aristotle and his moral categories that Augustine followed by St Thomas followed as an overlay on Holy Scripture. If one does not follow those arguements , in context, and then leaps to the Formula of Concord, one will see the main points as being about the lords supper and election , etc and will read Lutheranism through a reformed filter and .... just not get it. it will be the wrong context.Lutherans believe that the Image of God = Adamic Original Righeousness =..... faith alone in christ alone.Ergo: the restoration of the Image of God and Original Righeousness is the restoration of faith in Christ. Alone!Rome and Calvin agree: The restoration of the Image of God and Original Righeousness is the reconformity to the Divine Law of God which reveals the mind of God. So the Gospel serves as the way to return to all that. Gospel ultimately serves the Divine Law!
Anyone interested in Confessional Lutheranism or Church history must read this book. The tyranny of the papacy, the abuses of scripture the Roman church had developed through the centuries, simply breath taking. The world owes a debt to the Protestant reformation, and chiefly, Wycliffe, Hus and Luther.
As a Lutheran this is a wonderful addition to my library. I do have the later version of the Concordia as a hardcopy but this gives me access to what we believe, teach, and confess wherever I go.
The Book of Concord-Concordia Triglotta Edition is an early translation of the Christian confessions. I use this book to supplement the Concordia Publishing House publication CONCORDIA THE LUTHERAN CONFESSIONS, As a supplement, I want to have complete understanding of the writings of our early church fathers in the 16th and 17th centuries. The writings of the early twentieth fill in the gaps that latter writters have created in more recent publications.
