This book is heavy reading. Having been involved in teaching Catholic faith for over 10 years, it's something I value. However, there is a lot of information to digest and it has to be read carefully. I shared it with my education committee and most of them did not like to read it and therefore didn't. This is for the serious educator and is read easier in a like group who can discuss it.
A term, concept, calling, and duty from the early days of Christianity, "catechesis" (related to catechism) is the part of Catholicism concerned with "education in the faith of children, young people, and adults which includes especially the teaching of Christian doctrine imparted...in an organic and systematic way, with a view to initiating the hearers into the fullness of Christian life." The Second Vatican Council called for a renewal of catechesis in 1971. The "Directory" provides guidance for this catechesis that is a central part of the Church's activity and aims at all times in all situations with all persons. Mostly for Catholic bishops and priests, the "Directory" nonetheless does have particular sections for lay persons; and its general material on Catholic ideals and theological principles, organizations and procedures, and texts and other resources apply to anyone interested in catechesis, the lifeblood of Catholicism.
As a member of our parish's RCIA team, this book is one of the most valuable resources I have. It is a must have if you do any ministries at all. God Bless!
This is the perfect book for me. It's a required text, yes, but as a new catechist, it has a great deal of knowledge that I seek--all in one place. Well written and readable. I recommend this book for new and experienced catechists!
This is like a textbook. If you want to get the love of Christ, read the Gospel of St. Mark. If you want a question answered, go to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. If you are required to read it, for school, buy it and read it quickly, and get back to the Joy of the Gospel.
This book is meant more for those who are going to be teaching the Catholic faith as opposed to those who want to learn about it. It presents a model or method to keep in mind for a person who is presenting the Catholic faith to another person. Thus anyone might find this helpful, but most especially high school teachers, college professors, parish catechetical and RCIA teachers. It might also be helpful for undergraduate and graduate level theology students in that some may go on to be teachers or professors at some point and are looking for guide on how to present the teachings of the Catholic Church.
I like the informative side of the NDC, however, it is not written in an easy way. You need to have knowledge of the Catholic religion to be able to understand it. What I don't like about it is that it is only the US version of the Directory for Catechesis.
I really like this book. It is easy to read with good practical information. For the class that I am taking, I learned to read this book first because of the information given. it make the TDC book (said above) easier to understand and read. I prefer the style of writing in this book over said above. It gets right to the point without all the added extras. Sometimes going from theorist to theorist gets somewhat confusing to read.
