I purchased and read this wonderful book earlier this summer. Perhaps this is as much a testimony as a book review. I spent a good portion of my teenage and adult years in two (supposedly) conservative, KJV only, Independent Fundamental Baptist churches. As I began to seriously study the history of Baptists, while attending one of these churches about three and a half years ago, I read Baptist preacher James Beller's Baptist history book "America In Crimson Red". In it I learned that a great deal of the Baptists of the past were Calvinists. (Note: Beller was basically a Arminian who inconsistently believed in Eternal Security -as do most Baptists). I was surprised to learn how many Baptists of the past held to the doctrine of Sovereign Grace. The only knowledge of Sovereign Grace (the key point of Calvinism) that I had previous to this was "kindergarten level preaching against Calvinism by the man in the pulpit of the church I was attending (and no longer attend!). There were verses about election and predestination that I could not explain away, and they kept dogging me. I came across and read the late Ian R.K. Paisley's superb defense of the KJV entitled "My Plea For The Old Sword", and learned that he was an adherent of the doctrine of Sovereign Grace. Then, about two years ago, I came across several good books by Michael Bunker and found him to likewise believe in Sovereign Grace! Then in the summer of 2014, I read Thomas Kidd's book "God of Liberty A Religious History of the American Revolution". Kidd openly talked about the fact that most Christians in America at the time were Calvinists.
