This book is what it says it is in the title, which I greatly appreciate. It lists all of the questions and answers of the Westminster Catechism in order, divided by the Lord's Day they are assigned to. Each question and answer is then followed by the Scripture text references printed out underneath that question. This is very convenient. This way I can immediately look down and read a Scripture reference to support the stated question and answer. This book is especially helpful when teaching on the Catechism. When necessary I can scan down and see which Scriptures are most appropriate to explain a certain question in the catechism. If necessary, I can just read the passage. Occasionally, even though I probably should not do this, I just copy the questions and answers for the day with the Scriptures. If anyone is doing a study on the Heidelberg Catechism, this is a necessary resource.
When I need to memorize something, I break it up into phrases, indent portions, etc. What's really great about this edition is that they already do this for you. I was really surprised when I opened it up and saw that lengthy answers are indented intuitively. For instance, Q2 asks "how many things are necessary...". The answer is "Three....", and the three answers are indented one under the other. This sort of visual clue makes it much easier to memorize -- it has already organized the response.I also appreciate the source texts after each Q&A.
The Heidelberg Catechism is a catechism for the Reformed Church movement. The other catechism that I know and read is the Shorter Catechism based on the Westminster Confession. The WC is longer and more detailed and I like it very much. The HC confession is shorter and "warmer". The HC is designed to be used in a class or a church and has one lesson weekly. If used properly, it can be of great benefit in one's Christian spiritual life. I recommend both the HC and the WC. Each can be purchased with or without supporting Scripture Texts in the same book.I recommend this book.
I taught this cathechism for 1o years to 11-13 year-olds.I now finally have a copy of my own & it is everything I remembered. There are very few questions in life that won't find an answer here!
This book was clearly written and very easy to understand. I bought it to find out what and why I believe what I do. This was definitely worth buying. I came away wanting others to read it also and share my enthusiasm with it.
It was a gift to a friend of mine, and he absolutely loved it and gave it a raving review.
