I bought this book because I had just heard Rolf Jacobson at a conference for the second time. I used it for devotional reading and it certainly was good for that. It's a highly accessible book complete with interactive lessons built in and a conversational style all the while it is scholarly. The attempt is not to blow you away with scholarship, but to do what the title says, invite you to appreciate what's there so you can go further on your own. I intend to be able to use the psalms as starting places for daily devotions. After I bought this book, our congregation decided to take a stab at the narrative lectionary. For some reason, no psalms are appointed for the readings and I will have to add them. After reading this book, I think I can do a credible job of that.
It is what it claims to be. It is inviting. It is an academic book to be sure, with deep academic integrity. However, it is an inviting book. It's not meant merely for Hebrew, OT, or Psalms scholars alone. This is not a book meant to only be within that cohort. As a pastor I return to it time and again to gain greater clarity on a psalm on which I am reflecting, and particularly struggling. And each time...I am pleased with the knowledge and insight I've gained. To often the Psalms are thinly understood, but this book invites the biblical reader into a rich engagement with any given psalm. Well worth it.
'Invitation To The Psalms', is an excellent introduction to the Psalter. With chapters on the basic structure of Hebrew poetry; the various genres of the Psalms; the use of metaphor, imagery, and symbolism in the Psalms; and finally, a chapter on the theology of the Psalms, the authors give the reader an excellent foundation for reading and understanding the Psalms. And as with any well-written introductory text, there are helpful suggestions for further reading and study.I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the Psalter.
Fantastic book. Super easy to read and comprehend. You get a beautiful and thorough survey of how to approach the Psalms without getting lost in theological lingo.
This is an academic read but well worth it if you love the Psalms. I'm a Hebrew reader and even so learned so much from these two theological brothers.
