Yesterday I featured Alister McGrath's Theology: The Basics 3rd ed. It is an excellent (I might even say unrivaled) introduction into the study of theology. The only thing it lacks is an equally helpful introduction to the key thinkers and shapers of Christian theology. But, that is precisely what he has provided in Theology: The Basic Readings 2nd ed. As with The Basics this text is meant to be an introduction to important documents in the church's history. McGrath has cut down the over 300 readings in his larger Christian Theology Reader into a shorter and more accessible reading. He pairs the chapters and readings to correspond to the chapters in The Basics and the organization of each chapter follows historical progression (Patristics, Medieval, Reformation and Modern). Such an organization allows readers to track the refining of doctrine through history. It also humanizes the study of theology by connecting certain ideas with their authors. Historical Theology - as it's known - is of tremendous value to contemporary believers because, like nothing else, it forces us to recognize the hand of God on his people. It is pastors, teachers and lay-people which God uses to lead his people. He has used his people to lead them into truth and protect them from error.Read alongside The Basics this book is an excellent introduction to theology and church history. The emphasis upon the readings places the focus upon the original authors themselves rather than McGrath's interpretation of those readings.Just like The Basics it would make a great text to for sunday school or bible study. It would also serve well used as a text for introductory theology, historical theology or church history courses.
