I am a very recent convert to Max Lucado. I was pleasantly introduced to his writing through my fiancée. Although I can't honestly say that I am not a real pioneer, nor veracious reader of Christian literature, what experience I have had in the past has been totally unlike Lucado's rewarding and relaxing method of teaching and augmenting the word of our lord. My impression of Max Lucado, now some dozen or so books in the past has not changed at all, for neither has he. His approach to the love, strength, and wisdom of Christ's teachings have always brought with it a nice folksy sort of down home style that relaxes the reader, and seems to bring a genuine human quality to Christ and his life, and legacy. When I hear the words of Max Lucado, I never feel very far away from the teachings and instruction of the Christian values of my younger years. When most of what we learned was derived from the experiences of, and examples set by the very fabric of our lives simply unfolding. His instruction and interpretations of the holy book never really take on a real preaching style of fire and brimstone. Indeed, reading his word tends to give one the impression always that he is talking to you in a soft spoken casual manner that leaves an impression in its wake of just containing a whole lot of biblical common sense. Real life experiences by himself and a host of others both famous and unheard of bring a colorful commentary to his style, thus setting many examples in all of his books that most of us can well identify with, and even more importantly, understand completely. Since discovering his fireside chat style of teaching and patience, I have come to compare him to an evangelical Will Rogers.
"Max on Life" was a fun, topical based discussion, as Max Lucado shared letters he has received, with questions about our Heavenly Father and His Word. Broken up into seven sections: * Hope * Hurt * Help * Him/Her * Home * Haves/Have-Nots * HereafterMax Lucado shares biblical based insights into most often asked questions, in a way that is clearly Max Lucado that we have all come to know and loved, but also questions that may have been nagging us in the back of our mind, and for some, maybe afraid to ask out loud or didn't think of asking, but has crossed our minds here and there. What I enjoy, is not only just the "Lucadoism" that we have come to know, but practical and bite sized essays that helps provide quick answers, for many, who may have found themselves faced with questions such as: * I spent several years of my life away from God. I became a Christian as a youngster, but when I was a teenager, I quit going to church and reading my bible. I stopped praying to God and obeying Him. During that time, was I saved? * I'm a new Christian. Over the years I've developed a lot of bad habits. How do I get rid of them now? * Does God lead us through feelings? When people say, "I sense God's guidance,' What are they describing? These and many other questions and Max's insight into them, can be found in, "Max on Life"; Not meant to be an end all to everything, this is an inspiration, encouragement and often discovery of things, we may have never thought of contemplating before.
I'm naturally leery of any person who claims to have all the answers. And sometimes I steer clear of the "big Christian authors" simply because they're "big Christian authors" - I know, I'm repenting for being prejudiced and judgmental. But I also "pride" myself on being open-minded and open-hearted and hearing God's Truth from wherever and whomever it comes. That said I enjoyed this book more than I expected I would. As I read, where I expected pat "theologically sound" answers, the author pointed the questioner back to the Bible again and again, giving scriptural answers without dogma. He's not afraid to say things like: "our suffering can be a small assignment when compared with the reward." (p. 39) The questions feel like real questions asked by real people, not questions the author or editors came up with because they were the ones they wanted to answer. Questions like, "Why pray if God is in control?" (p. 77) and "Why did God heal my friend from cancer but not me?" (p. 81) This book addresses some very personal questions, like: How to forgive someone who has abused you sexually (p. 50); How to deal with anger issues (p. 45); How to treat an employee as a Christian and correct bad behavior but still be loving (p. 52). The questions and answers are divided into seven topics: Hope, Hurt, Help, Him/Her, Home, Haves/Have-Nots, and Hereafter.Believers at all stages of their walk will find relevant questions and answers. Lucado's answers are full of godly wisdom and practical, biblically-based advice with examples and stories to make it all understandable and relatable. I love that he doesn't make excuses for God but admits that sometimes we just don't know why. God can see the big picture, we can't.
