To whom the book is written: LDS Temple patron would most benefit from reading this book. It provides ancient and modern context for the symbolism and meanings of the temple experience. One unexpected delight was the way that the author brought the atonement to life through the House of the Lord. What I was expecting: A deep, and slightly inaccessible book on the temple practices of ancient civilizations, similar to Nibley’s Temple and Cosmos, but found something accessible in the form of the fruits of the author having explored the topics thoroughly through the scriptures, history of ancient near east culture and language, and the words of modern prophets. The linguistic facets of Hebrew that gave an unexpected and delightful depth and context to difficult-to-understand words or verses of scripture. To students of the gospel, this context is generally unavailable without in study of Aramaic and Ancient Hebrew. What it really was: Yes, it is about the temple, AND it provides context and background of the temples of the ancient world in a way that deepened my understanding of and appreciation for the Atonement. You may have read Wilcox’s “Believing Christ.” I recall my delight when I read that and went from relating to the Atonement as a get out of jail free event to relating to it as the way for God to enable, empower, and amplify our efforts and forward our becoming beings of divine vision and word. The author relates experiences, real life examples and metaphor to dance with the reader through to discovering what is possible with a full on connection between temple covenants and life as lived powerfully. What I loved: Hardison gathered her sources from ecclesiastic, historical, cultural, linguistic, and personal sources.
