I read this book in 4 hours. It's a must read for those who believe in the power of angelic visitations, for those who've experienced first-hand the power of angelic visitations as I have, for those who wish to know if they have been visited by angels, and for those who seek comfort in their darkest hours.This book is very well-referenced, and though some things are repeated, I didn't mind that because it either reinforced sacred concepts, or I just really loved reading the same story told in a different way, or in a different context.It is written with the Mormon member in mind. Still, I haven't been active in the religion for years, and yet the book gave me a lot of comfort and peace with the adversity I've recently had to face. Since we will all face adversity in our lives at some point, this is a good book to put in your library and pick up as needed. And it really doesn't matter what religion you are, if angels fascinate you, you'll appreciate this book.And with its timeless message, it can be read many times over! Well worth the money, imo.
This book is well researched and documented. I like the sensitivity that was used with many of the stories and the effort that was taken to stay out of 'Mormon Folklore' stories. If it could not be documented with scripture or reasonable public information, it is not included.I also liked the inclusion of Old Testament accounts, my experience is that often it is either overlooked or just not included.The chapter style is OK, but not my favorite, it makes it seem like things are being repeated, when they are referencing a different perspective or topic. I found that if I read a chapter a day, it was much easier to read and the sense of things being repeated went away.
I enjoyed this book very much, however, the author left out one very important function that angels perform: that of Family History work. Anyone who has spent time in the Family History Library in Salt Lake can attest to the help received by angels, particularly those waiting for their work to be done. I've seen and heard of many instances where actual physical things have happened to help find names and information, such as books falling off shelves, etc. I think this is an opportunity missed!
Extremely good book, every page was interesting, imformative and educational. I urge everyone to read this book. Having some experience with this subject enlightened and confirmed what I already knew.
Angels have long been a source of interest to mortals. Their images have been depicted in art for thousands of years. They have been included in songs and other writings for just as long. This book takes the chance to separate the myths from the facts by using scripture and other accounts of interactions with angels to teach some very interesting truths. It's an interesting chance to learn what you do and do not know about something we have all heard so much about.I loved the approach this book took. Each chapter was a fact about angels, and then the evidence was laid out in very clear fashion. A lot of the evidence is based on scripture with some more recent statements from LDS leaders added in. There are also other accounts, usually from early church leaders, to help give a fuller picture. Because everything is sourced so well, it's easy to figure out exactly where everything is coming from. This helps to give the reader a chance to search and ponder the things in the book.There were a lot of things to learn from this book, and I found it to be very entertaining while still being informative. Two things really stuck out with me while reading this. The first was it seems like many of us may have had interactions with angels unawares. How cool is that thought? It made me want to be nicer to everyone I meet as you just never know who you are talking to. The other thought was how loved we are. We are never left alone on the Earth. There are always so many people trying to help us get through this life, and this book offered some concrete proof of that. This is a book that I think many people will enjoy and feel lighter for having read it.Book provided for review.
I have always considered the subject of angels to be fascinating. They play a not insignificant role in scripture. Among other things I am interested in the 4 types of angels (not counting mortal I.e. people, angels). An informative and interesting read!
As far as I can tell, Donald Parry has done a thorough research on all references to angels in the Scriptures. He discusses every aspect of their interaction with us mortals. He also discusses some first-hand accounts of angels' interaction with early members of the Mormon church. I enjoyed reading the book and recommend it to anyone who is interested in scriptural accounts of angels.
This book brings to the forefront the reality of angels and how close they really are to us. It was comforting to learn of their presence, comfort and protection. My only critisism is that it got a little long towards the end. A good book.
