I thought it was a good idea to borrow several books from the library about a new baby in the house. I was surprised how many of the books I checked out were terrible. They talked about loving the baby more, or putting mom in the trash can. This is not one of those books! It is a great introduction to the idea of having a baby brother. It mentions the good with the bad, like maybe knocking over your blocks or getting in the way. But it also teaches that he is just a baby, and he learns from his older siblings. My favorite part is where it says "and if he grows up watching all that you do, surely he'll be amazing for he'll be just like you!" We loved it so much we bought it!
I ordered this for my very sweet, anxious and excited 4 Yr. old little cousin who is expecting a baby brother in September. I received it in the mail and was really taken a back by how negative it was page after page after page. I found myself reading and hoping that the author was about to pour a little sugar on the harsh predictions of what a little brother would be like. The ending made an attempt at this but it truly was too little and far too late. I feel I must mention that my little cousin really wanted a baby sister, and with the help of the family, has been slowly warming up to the idea of a brother. Now, I have visions of her running for cover during diaper changes for fear that he will "pee in her eye"! Really?! The fact that this line rhymes with the prior claims, "he will spit and he will cry", hardly secures the green light for appropriate. Humor aside, not really the image of Little Brother I am looking for. I am now on the market for a new book that actually boosts my little cousin's excitement.
This book is ridiculously cute. I bought it for my girls since they're getting a little brother. This talks about how brothers are small and can be a pain in the butt. My kids have been reading it nightly and they get a kick out of the "watch out because he can pee in your eye" part. They think it's hilarious. I love that it's hard cover so my 2 year old can't rip the pages out. Cute book, cute illustrations and my kids are super excited for their little brother!
Fun for my two year old daughter! This book is a gender friendly book- because of how it has been illustrated- it can either be for a soon-to-be big sister or big brother. My daughter became very interested in this book after my son was born. She's been able to compare her own experiences with the examples shown in this book. Each page of this book points out one reality that an older sibling will have to face with a little brother. The conclusion is also very sweet and is my daughter's favorite part. There is also an extra page provided for a picture of the older sibling with the younger brother. This is definitely one you'll need on your book shelf!
This book is great. It's funny, cute and honest. My daughter really wanted a baby sister, but she is getting a baby brother. We read this book together and yes, as I was first reading it I though "how negative" but there was a reason and completely made sense by the end of the book. It opened up conversation with my daughter and she is really excited about having a baby boy around. My daughter asks to read it many nights, we've had it about a month now, and each night we talk about something new she is going to teach baby brother how to do or how she can help take care of him.
This book was great for preparing our 2.5 year old to be a big brother. We originally borrowed it from the library and I was so impressed that I ordered a copy for him. It doesn't sugarcoat, it tells it like it is (baby brothers will steal your toys, knock down your blocks etc.) but it's all done with humor and my son still loves this book. He's been a big brother now for 2 months and still wants to read this book at bedtime. I highly recommend it!
This was a cute book to lead discussions with my almost four-year-old about what it will be like to have a baby brother. It has short simple rhymes and incorporates humor. Just the right length and information for an older toddler or young preschooler. It will really depend on the person if they find the humor appropriate. One of the lines goes "you better watch out or he'll pee in your eye". My daughter thought this was hilarious and I personally didn't have a problem with it. It covers the good and the bad: a baby brother will screw up your toys, best to prepare your older child for that but it will also be a rewarding experience. We like to talk about how important being a big sister will be and how she can teach him things. This book covers that nicely. The ending is sappy but never fails to tear me up in my hormonal state.
We got this book for our 22 month old to help him get ready for his baby brother. He really likes it and I think it did help him. There's a place in the back to put the name and picture of baby brother after he does arrive. I think this book was a great idea and I'm glad we bought it.
