Salaam: A Muslim American Boy's Story
Ebooks Online

A sensitive and loving portait of a Muslim-American family Meet Inram, a young Muslim American boy who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. He likes to do the same things as most kids his age--play in the park, take karate lessons, and tell jokes with his friends. Inram knows that some people don't understand what it means to be a Muslim. He wants to help everyone see that Muslims strive to be good people, just like people of other faiths do. Tricia Brown and Ken Cardwell have created a warm, sensitive portrait of a boy and his family who are both Muslim and American at the same time.

This book is excellent for kids of all ages. I bought this for my 4 year old twins and I've read it to them several times. The photos are excellent and the writing is simple and beautifully written. Makes a great gift as well!

This book is as must read for all folks no matter what age. It portrays the American dream only thru the eyes of a Muslim boy. It is sensitive, provacative, and has superb imagery of life. You must read this book.

From a Muslim point of view I actually did not like this book. I thought that this book did not accurately show the values and teachings of Islam. Instead of showing that yes Muslims are different than other Americans it tried to make it seem like they are just like everyone else. I feel like overall people instead of trying to deny our differences we need to learn to accept and embrace diversity. One example is on page 3 it talks about celebrating birthdays with his friend. In Islam we are taught that we should only celebrate Eid which occurs 2 times per year and Ramadan. We don't celebrate birthdays or any other holidays. Also in the book it talks about being a rock star. In Islam we are taught not to listen to music and use musical instruments. It also mentioned that they give their zakat to American soldiers overseas. This I have a big problem with because zakat is intended to go to the poor. Generally most Muslims are not happy about what is going on overseas due to the amount of wars the united states is involved in with Muslim countries along with the number of civilian casualties caused by these wars. This book also had some minor mistakes like that we pray 5 times a day based on the moon when really we pray throughout the day according to the sun.
