I bought this for my son who is almost 11. He's had a history of getting bullied at school quite a bit and has put up a hard shell exterior to 'protect' himself. I was hoping this book would have some stories in it to help him deal with this. I didn't know if he'd read it so I told him we could read it together, one or two stories at a time at night. We did that for a few days. One day he told me he'd finished the book. He just kept reading it. He does love to read. He said it made him feel good that he wasn't the only kid to be going through this stuff. He seemed lighter afterward. Now he wants to read the teen book I got for his older brother. I think this book made tween life just a little more bearable for my son. That is so worth it. And, he can read it over and over again as he feels he needs it.
Preteens have a hard enough time entering that stage of their life and may sometimes feel like they are alone. This Chicken Soup book is great because it is real stories from preteen years (also know as tweens!) It contains 101 stories dealing with typical preteen issues like self confidence, changing schools, first crushes, doing the right thing, finding your passion, embarrassing moments, bullies, and more. I definitely could relate to a lot of the stories from way back when I was a tween! I think it is a great book to show tweens they are not alone and sometimes worse things can happen! I laughed at the stories, felt bad, and felt proud.
This is a birthday gift for my granddaughter who will be turning 11 in a few days. I looked through this book and I think she will be very pleased with it. She is getting into that stage when peer pressure is becoming more important to her, and since she will be entering middle school in the fall, perhaps she will feel a little more at ease reading the stories in this book..
My daughter is 11 and started 6th grade. With the many changes in preteens this book really reached her and is helping her through this time in her life. I will add that she isn't all the interested in reading she's more of a math and science kid but she is reading this book!!!
Called to be a preteen teacher I needed to get in touch with the issues they face today. This is a rich resource for both me and the preteens I group with. I only draw back it you have to read a lot of stories to find the one that meets your youth's need a moment. If the back of it there was a list of what you are in need of like, "yikes I'm in middle school!" Or hope for me as I struggle with my "parents divorce". The index would list divorce, or school troubles. If it had that type of index, every youth minister would own one.
I teach character education to students in grades 4 and 5. I found a great resource with this book. The stories are geared to this age group. They are written by their peers. This book contains some thought provoking stories that can be used as a discussion springboard. My own daughter loved this series. I was delighted to find one for pretense.
This was an amazing book. These were true stories. That's amazing. This book has changed my life. I see from different perspectives of people. The bullies perspective and the bullied person's perspective.
Bought this for my daughter, she is 11, little childish- she said :), but kept coming back to read, guess it's ok, I found some stories helping myself to understand more about preteens.
