I ADORE this book! In college, I majored in English, and had a fair amount of instruction on Arthurian legends and ballads, including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, so, on seeing this in my birthday gifts, my attention was riveted.Now, I have been in the bad habit of recent years of taking months to finish a book. Pick up, read half, forget for weeks, read a page or two every few days. This time, it took less than a week, and only that long because the book took some serious water damage (DAMN YOU CONTIGO!). It was just a delightful read, every single page. Full of absurdity and logic jokes, as well as just geenral silliness, but not to a Wonderland level. All the strangeness seemed rather down-to-Earth. There was a reason for it, and it all melded together in what for me will long be a perfect book.Read it, I command you. Or off with your head!
A book for smart and curious kids (and their parents ((or people who just like smart and curious things))). Children's literature is my passion, and what I admire most about this book is not its wit, its educational and question-provoking style, or the Pratchett-like fun in its satire, but the fact along with all that, it offers very, very important lessons for smart kids. This is the only children's book I've ever read that offered up the thought, "It's good that I'm smart and assertive, but maybe I should take the time to learn about a new situation before I assume I know how to fix it." God knows I could have saved myself some trouble if that thought had crossed my mind even once before I finished puberty.
Awesome book! My kids 4 and 6 love it! It is in a way like some of the kids movies today. There are great things that keep the kids interest and then there are some hidden gems to keep the adults interest as well!
Sure is interesting how somebody can be a genius in one area (web comics) and an utter nullity in another (children's books). In this case, the fields seem so closely related.I had high expectations for this book. For years I have been dazzled by Weinersmith's brilliance on SMBC. I hit that site every day. I helped fund this book during the support-raising process, so I got an early copy.Could not be more disappointed! Incoherent, self-indulgent, and overwritten. I think Weinersmith thinks his digressions are appealing. Perhaps to adults, but they'd just be confusing to kids. The key beats were so obscured in his "playful narration" that I frequently wasn't sure who was who, or what was going on.
It is such an amazingly well written book. My 4 year old, thinks it's hilarious, while myself and his mother wonder how the heck he's understanding what's going on. The art and story are fantastic, and I really truly hope Zach and Boulet do more work together!
Funny and super informative! Perfect for your precocious child or for the adult who wishes there was a book like this when they were a child. The illustrations are incredibly beautiful and tie in with the text flawlessly!
