Ebooks Online

A loving time capsule of midcentury CanadianaThe 2008 debut of The Collected Doug Wright: Canada's Master Cartoonist introduced the world to the charms of Canada's mischievous little kid Nipper, who appeared in newspapers across the country in the mid-twentieth century. Nipper is the first in a series of paperback annuals that will collect two years' worth of Wright's ingenious and enduring comic strip. This volume covers a peak period in Wright's four-decade career as he comes into his own as an iconic cartoonist capable of documenting middle-class suburban existence in all its minute joys and indignities. Packed with period details and loaded with charm, these collections of sublime wordless strips feature designs by the acclaimed cartoonist Seth and a brief introduction by the writer Brad Mackay.

I hafta admit, I'd forgotten all about this comic, although I grew up reading it in the sunday paper. I bought this book out of curiosity, and was astounded at how incredibly good these comics are. Simple little wordless stories of ordinary life, but pure genius. And - they're HILARIOUS! The art is well done - well composed and beautifully drawn. Each panel is a gem. I would give it 5 stars, but for some reason Drawn and Quarterly made the dunderheaded decision to print these small - much smaller than they originally ran in the newspapers. So - ten stars for Doug Wright and his genius comic, and 4 stars for the publisher for printing them in such a mingy size.

The Collected Doug Wright: Volume One: Canada's Master Cartoonist is a biographical essay about Wright, and contains a sampling of his work, not only with Nipper, but also some of his other work: "Max & Mini", "Cynthia" and "The Wheels", and a series of editorial cartoons. This first volume of a series covers 1963-1964; the second volume is Nipper 1965-1966.I can't remember where I originally saw these strips -- it was in New York City -- but I'm not sure what publication. But it was a joy to find these two collections and find real insights into life in Canada. The pictures are a little small -- I wish they were bigger -- but what joy to see them again at all.Robert C. Nipper is one of those strips lost to us in time. Doug Wright's Nipper is an amazing strip and thanks to Drawn and Quarterly will have a greater exposure. If Peanuts is Americana, then Nipper is equivalent to Canadian culture. The more affordable strip is great little buy for any budget. This is one series you would not want to miss. You will get nipped by Nipper. The Collected Doug Wright: Volume One: Canada's Master Cartoonist
