Last year, when my daughter started preschool at age 2.5, I started the tradition of getting her a new book for the first day of school each year. (I write a letter in the front cover about what she is like now, my wishes for her at school, etc. I hope they will be a lovely keepsake that she can hand down.) This year, preschool year 2 (age 3.5), I chose this book. I admit that I chose it because it is beautiful. The cover and all of the illustrations are heartwarming, detailed renderings that evoke a nostalgia for the illustrated children's books of the 1960's and 70's by authors/illustrators like Ezra Jack Keats and Don Freeman. Sue Rama's bright illustrations are a feast for the eyes, and really bring the diverse group of preschool children and their classroom to life. My daughter just loves looking at the pictures and pointing things out that she notices about the classroom. The text, however, is a different story. Rhyming stanzas mix with straight text. Are we rhyming or are we speaking? It's not clear, and it makes the book difficult for reading aloud. The cadence varies greatly, again making it an awkward read. Each page is devoted to a different aspect of preschool life (preschool time, circle time, play time, sharing time, manners, fire drills, thinking about home time, time for friends, nap time, field trip time, time to make stuff, clean up time, and time to go home) I love the IDEA, but are too many "sections" represented and each page has too much text. A good children's book editor, in my view, should have told the author to cut the book to about half this length. We don't need a separate section on field trips or fire drills for preschoolers.
