This charming story is one that every child should read (or have read to them!). Not only does it have an encouraging message and introduce aspects of Japanese culture; it's also VERY beautifully illustrated, and Chieri Uegaki's writing is a pleasure to read. I love the way she phrases things, like when Suki sits close to the taiko drummers and feels "like she'd swallowed a ball of thunder and her whole insides quaked and quivered." Buy this book -- you won't be disappointed.

Suki's Kimono is a very nice book about a Japanese girl who is teased for wanting to wear her kimono on her first day of school. Instead of feeling embarassed about her clothes, Suki embraces her differenced and explains to her teacher and friends why she wears her Japanese clothes! A fun read for preschoolers and probably elementary school kids too.
"Suki's Kimono" is about a young Japanese girl, Suki, who wears her favorite kimono from her grandmother to school on the first day. Her older sisters tell her it's not cool and warn her about what others might think, but Suki wears it anyway because she is proud of it and its memories. I love the message behind this book: be yourself and don't worry about what others think of you. I read this to my second graders every year and we have a nice discussion about what makes us all unique and why it's important to celebrate those differences. The illustrations are beautifully done also. Awesome book!
"Suki's Kimono" is about a young Japanese girl who wears her favorite kimono, given to her by grandmother, to her first day of school despite being teased by her older sisters. When she arrives at school, the other children are very interested by her Kimono and Suki tells them about the Japanese festival she attended with her grandmother. The book celebrates the differences in people as well as their cultures and shows that something unique to you is fun to share with friends. I purchased this book for my daughter to help her understand other cultures from around the world as well as to understand that being different is good, even if other people try to make you feel bad about it. I absolutely loved sharing this book with her at bedtime. She absolutely loved the story and its illustrations, and I would like to think it is helping her understand that differences are good.
Suki's Kimono is a sweet book about dancing to the beat of one's own drummer, while affirming family ties. Suki's sisters tease her when she wants to wear a traditional kimono to class, but the kimono brings back happy memories, so Suki stands firm. Being Japanese-American on my mother's side, I was cheering for Suki as she went to class and lived some of her memories out loud.One stereotype of Japanese-Americans is that they can be quite shy and put the needs of others above themselves. Of course, any person can meet this profile, but less discussed is a (sometimes adaptive) stubborn streak and self-understanding. I bought this book for my son, because the connection to family rings true. I also bought it for myself, and was happy to see the main character dance.
The story is so wonderful. This little girl sticks out and wears this kimono even though her sisters don't. It's something I can imagine really happening in school. The book came in great condition and my daughter and I are very happy with it.
I picked up this book at the library, thinking it would be a fun look into Japanese culture for my own hapa kids.I wasn't anticipating such a moving book. Suki decides to wear her kimono on the first day if school, despite snickers from her older sisters. We hear the backstory, describing Suki's time spent with her Obachan and how the kimono reminds her of those special times. After losing my Obachan earlier in the year, I immediately choked up and barely made it through the rest of the story.Despite the sudden onset of unexpected emotion, I foraged through the book. The narrative goes on to detail Suki's courage and independence as she asserts her own unique personality among the petty environment that is elementary school.While I have a unique personal attachment to the story, it also sets a great example for my kids. I immediately purchased the book and am excited to continue to share this story with my kids long after I return the borrowed version.
