One of my favorite things about this one is the word - Jitters. What a FANTASTIC way to describe difficult feelings like fear and anxiety to a six year old. Most children don't know how to communicate those types of emotions because they are not equipped with the language and coping skills. It makes me think about the importance of emotional intelligence. As an educator I am a big part of helping the inner growth of a child. Bibliotherapy like this is a great step in supporting that growth especially when students are feeling school is a fearsome place. I showed First Grade Jitters to both of our 1st grade teachers and they read it at the start of the school year. Apparently, at the end of the day one of the teachers commented to her students she was nervous about something. "Oh, well then you have the jitters," replied one of her students. This gave me an "I heart kids" moment. It will be nice as the school counselor to use the word jitters as a communication and validation tool.
Honestly, I was not a big fan of this one. The main character seemed, to me, much younger than a rising first-grader. He is refusing to eat anything and throws a tantrum in the shoe store...I understand this is all part of the "jitters" but my daughter (who is a rising first grader) said "This kid is a little bit crazy." I can say, I do not know many first graders who would go ape-crazy at the shoe store....it would have seemed more realistic if he were going to start preschool or maybe kindergarten. Also, he seems to only notice towards the end of the summer that he has not seen any of his friends and they have been out of town for the entire summer vacation...that also seemed sort of unrealistic, like he would have asked about this earlier and found some other kids to hang out with while his school friends were on vacation. I know my kids always have at least an awareness of the fact that people are out of town, and do not think they just totally disappeared. I did like the illustrations, I was just hoping the character would be more relative to real -life 6-7 year olds.
Cute book that my 5-year-old enjoyed as he is going into 1st-grade this year! I found out after purchasing it that it's the same book they read in kindergarten this spring!
This book is a must to read to first graders on their first day of school. A little rabbit is very worried about his first day in first grade. He shares his jitters with his friends. Read to find out how his first day goes. This book will spur a great discussion among the children about their own first grade jitters.
My grandson has older cousins who had said they don't like school. By the night before first grade he was sure it was going to be horrible. I read the story to him at bedtime, so glad we read early. He had to reread it to me after the first time. Then we had a great conversation about what to expect. He went to bed being excited about going to school. Great read for your first grader.
The boy I bought this book for doesn't have any first grade jitters, and I worried that it would give him some. I would only recommend this if a child truly is experiencing some anxiety pre-first grade. If not, there are plenty of other books on this subject to match high levels of excitement and anticipation.
Teachers Pay Teachers has many great activities to go with this book. My first graders loved making their own jitter juice. It is a perfect first day of school read aloud!
Perfect for the first day! The kids learned a new vocabulary word on the first day of school. The next day we read First Day Jitters and made comparisons. I can't wait to read The 100th Day Surprise! with my kids.
