Messianic Judaism: A Modern Movement With An Ancient Past
Ebooks Online

?In the first century of the Common Era, tens of thousands of Jewish people followed Yeshua (Jesus), believing him to be the promised Messiah of Israel. They didn't renounce their heritage, their customs, nor their people. They remained Jews. Two thousand years later, hundreds of thousands of Jewish people follow Yeshua, also believing that he is the Messiah. They, too, have not renounced their heritage, customs, nor their people. Messianic Judaism is the modern movement that is bringing it all together, for Jews and non-Jews.

David H. Stern is (along with Dan Juster and Michael L. Brown) one of the most respected "theologians" of the "Messianic Jewish" movement. Stern is also the author of Complete Jewish Bible : An English Version of the Tanakh (Old Testament) and B'Rit Hadashah (New Testament), Jewish New Testament Commentary: A Companion Volume to the Jewish New Testament, Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel: A Message for Christians Condensed from Messianic Judaism, and Messianic Jewish Manifesto (of which this is an expansion). He writes in the Preface to this 2007 revised edition, "This book is a partially revised version of my book 'Messianic Jewish Manifesto,' which I developed in 1975 and wrote in 1988. That book was addressed primarily to Messianic Jews, offering elements of ideology, theology and program in a call to action. However, I hoped it would also be informative for others, whether in favor of our movement, or just curious. That book fulfilled my expectations. Now the time has come to update it."Here are some quotations from the book:"The central theme of this book is that without Messianic Judaism...

This was an excellent book that built on a foundation of inquiry that I gained after reading books by [author:Zola Levitt|15981]and Kirt Schneider. That inquiry involved a mixture of the following:1. How do Jews and followers of Judaism relate to God's overall plan?2. How should Christians relate to Judaism and followers of Judaism to Christians?3. Can a person be a Jew and a Christian? If so, how does this work out in real life?Stern's book answered a lot of these questions and more in very easy-to-understand manner. He takes readers through a variety of trails that lead them to start to question their assumptions. I know that I did, after reading this.Growing up, I was raised a Southern Baptist, and came to subscribe to the "Replacement Theology" concerning Judaism and Christianity. The "Replacement Theology" is the belief that the Church replaced Israel as God's special people. As I got older, I started to question this, because the Bible clearly has several places where God says he will restore and protect Israel. Why would He if the Church has replaced Israel?Stern's book answered that question and opened my mind to the possibility of a bigger plan that is revealed in Scripture. Stern also introduced me to other concepts that I had no clue about the Law of Return, halakhah, and mitzvot. These concepts increased my understanding of some of the issues surrounding ancient and modern Jewish Christians as they navigated through both Judaism and Christianity. Stern is a strong advocate for Messianic Judaism and lays out a bold plan and program to meet that purpose. That being said, Stern also leaves a lot of unanswered questions in this book. Big questions, which he hopes that readers will answer.
