Not to be a wiseguy about it, but picture books are now pricey enough that I hesitate to just buy them on spec. I've been burned a couple of times on books that looked really interesting and then turned out to be, well, odd or sort of off-kilter. Not so here - I found this book to be an unalloyed delight. The book scored high marks on the things that matter to me. The illustrations are bright, clear and colorful. The characters are very engaging and cheerful. "Adorable" isn't a word you see a lot, but these five ducklings really are pretty darn cute, and their playmates and the other characters are equally appealing. The general message - it's O.K. to miss Mom but you can still have fun when away at school - is mild and gently laid out. The larger message, that school is fun and interesting, is just as welcoming. The text is accessible, with simple rhymes and a crisp rhythm. The vocabulary is manageable and accessible. The effect is bright but comfortable and seems to lend itself to being read aloud and then later read together.I also like the fact that there are lots of clever little jokes and bits of business tucked into the background of each page. These are not just characters set against pastel washes. There are things to notice in the ducklings' home and at and on the way to school. A little kid could recognize that the ducklings are playing "Chutes and Ladders" or that the turtle kids like the swimming stream. During reading time the school kids adopt pretty much every pose a kid has ever assumed while sitting on the floor. This kind of detail adds a lot or interest and character and rereadability to a picture book, which seems to me to help keep a little reader interested. So, a very happy find, with a gentle and good-humored appeal. Good.
