I was looking for a series that is similar to Junie B. Jones. My 6 year-old loves reading Junie B. Jones books, but I find the "Junie B." character to be sassy and model inappropriate thoughts and behaviors. (i.e. She is always getting in trouble, she is thinking mean thoughts to her mother when her mother disciplines her, etc.) I wanted my daughter to have just as much fun reading about a character with better morals. In the Natalie books, the author always brings back the theme to the "big picture" (i.e. God is always with you). The Natalie character is similar in age and the child-like language used is similar to that in the Junie B. Jones books. My daughter loves the Natalie books just as much, and I feel much more comfortable with her reading them!
I bought these for my daughter, Natalie. I was so happy to have found a series with a girl going into Kindergarten, as my daughter was too. These books are VERY poorly written. I can barely read them to her because the syntax is so hard to follow. The author is trying to write like a 5 year old speaks, but it comes out as a poor-spoken mess. I really don't want my daughter picking up bad grammar habits, which is littered throughout this series.
I love the Natalie series. I was first introduced to this series because of this book and eagerly look forward to sharing the rest of the series with my twin daughters.Natalie is an adorable 5 year old and she is just about to go "kinder-garden" and while she is perplexed that there isn't a "garden" in Kinder-garden...she is excited about her new journey.Along with her best friend and her mom...she is able to conquer, enjoy and learn all about the adventures of becoming a "big" girl and going to school.My twins absolutely ate up this book. There are a few pictures but it is not a picture book so it was a wonderful way for them to stretch their imaginations and hone their listening skills sothat they would be able to really understand Natalie's adventures.I love the way that the author, Dandi Daley Mackall, truly uses 5-year old language to express Natalie's speech. Once you begin reading the book...it is so easy to visualize Natalie and her surroundings. Natalie is any little inquisitive 5 year old you will meet. She is adventurous, nervous, talkative, fun and mostimportantly inquisitive.With all my heart I believe then when the author can create a visual image in your mind easily they have succeeded in creating a dynamic character...and Natalie is all dynamo!Natalie: School's First Day of Me (That's Nat!)
