I love that this book contains so many different "staple" fairy tale stories. I was looking for a book of classic stories and was really surprised to find this one that contained literally every story I wanted in one book. Yes, they are abridged versions, but not so much that it takes away from the stories. The point for me was to just introduce my child to these stories. Later as they show interest, we can look at books that go more in depth. The art work is not really my style, it's kind of old fashioned, but it's pretty and nice and my toddler seems to enjoy it just fine.To address some of the negative comments that I've read about her stories being "sanitised", sure, some are, not all though. For example, the giant in Jack and the beanstalk, and the witch from Hansel and Gretel both bite it in the end, but the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood isn't gruesomely hacked open, nor is goldilocks eaten to teach kids that if they're rude and eat someone else's food, they're going to be devoured by wild animals or whatever that's about. I'm strangely okay with that. These comments really bugged me because, *every* generation cleans these tales up a bit. As a society, we progress and grow, and our values evolve. It's just the way it is. If it wasn't, then the our children would still be reading how the Little Mermaids kills herself at the end, or how Cinderella's stepsisters bleed to death after hacking up their feet to fit in the glass slipper. We live in an era where we don't teach our children lessons via horrifying stories; the stories are for fun now, and yeah, it's okay if they have happy endings. Also, these are obviously meant for very small kids, later on they can always read more serious versions of these stories, but why force morbid subject matter on toddlers?
