From heroes and monsters to love stories to tragedies, Rick Riordan’s PERCY JACKSON’S GREEK HEROES explains 12 myths surrounding a diverse collection of Greek heroes. After experiencing his own adventures and living to tell their tales in the two series Percy Jackson and the Olympians and The Heroes of Olympus, Percy Jackson takes on the task of narrating the lives of heroes from Ancient Greece like Theseus and Hercules.Riordan did a fabulous job forming an eclectic group of tales that range from 12 to 71 pages and follow both famous and unfamiliar heroes. He shares the legendary journey of Hercules but also reports lesser known story of Cyrene, who fell in love with two very different gods. The lesser known tales were fun to discover and the renowned heroes were interesting to view from a new perspective. Even though the stories took place thousands of years ago, it was easy to relate to the emotions and motivations of all of the heroes.Through Percy Jackson’s familiar voice, Riordan takes classic and sometimes elusive tales and makes them accessible and enjoyable for anyone interested in learning more about Ancient Greece. Drawing from many ancient texts like the ARGONAUTICA by Apollonius of Rhodes and the famous ILIAD by Homer, Riordan stays true to the events and roots of the myth. However, Percy Jackson’s familiar, comedic voice interjects both commentary and modern references into the text. Some of these allusions include that the god Apollo has an aversion to “Stairway to Heaven” and that the sun god Helios’s chariot has built-in AC and Bluetooth. The historical inaccuracy of these statements is evident, and therefore not misleading or harmful.PERCY JACKSON’S GREEK HEROES was a pleasure to read.
