Children love birthday parties. This is a book – a first if its kind – to help kids understand and celebrate the birthday of the Church. The Day When God Made the Church is the story of Pentecost and how the Holy Spirit shaped, and continues to shape, who we are as God’s Church. Children will learn the story of Pentecost: the sights, sounds, and events of that miraculous day described in the Book of Acts. They will also discover who the Holy Spirit is and how God calls each of us to follow Jesus. At the end, parents, educators, ministers will discover fresh ways to celebrate Pentecost with children in their own churches and families. Pentecost Sunday is May 15!

We will use the book this Sunday with my grandson reading the narrative and me showing the pictures to the congregation. We do not have small children so we don't have a Children's Sermon any more. The pastor is using this as the first scripture reading of the morning.

We are a couple of weeks away from Pentecost—the celebration of the outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh: wind and fire, young and old seeing visions and dreaming dreams, and women and men speaking with other tongues. Acts 2 tells the story of one-hundred-and-twenty disciples gathered and waiting, surprised and vivified by the Spirit's presence, knit together as one family—the church—the body of Christ.the-day-when-god-made-church-a-child-s-book-about-pentecost-4The Day When God Made the Church: A Child's First Pentecost Book by Rebekah McLeod Hutto (illustrated by Stephanie Haig) provides a way for parents, educators and ministers to share the story of the Holy Spirit's coming with young children. With Haig's vivid illustrations, Hutto narrates the rush of wind, the crowds confusion and highlight's from Peter's sermon. She stresses the good news of Christ's resurrection and the joy and new life given by the Spirit to all who respond to the good news of Jesus.Hutto is a Presbyterian Church (USA) minister at Brick Presbyterian Church where she serves as Associate Minister for Christian Education and Discipleship. She manages to tell the story of Pentecost in an engaging way that is simple enough for a three or four-year-old to apprehend, and true enough to events that older kids and adults (big kids) will also find it instructive. Haig's artwork includes ribbons of color and fire, people, animals and symbols. There is a variety of skin tones included among Jesus' disciples, signally the diversity of the body of Christ. This is a short picture book (paper back, 32 pages long) but it captures well the birth of the church. I recommend this book for parents, Christian education directors, Sunday School teachers who want to share the joy and Good News of the Spirit with their children. I give this four stars.Note: I received this book from Paraclete Press in exchange for my honest review.

This book's stirring words and evocative illustrations bring the birth of the Church to life in a way that both young and old can appreciate and enjoy! Often overlooked in mainline denominations, Pentecost and its meaning is brought front and center in this great new book! I'm looking forward to using it in my church and with my own children at home!

This book is such a clear and wonderful way to explain the mystery of Pentecost to children. The words tell the story with almost a lyrical quality - it is incredibly easy to read this book aloud to children with the kind of inflection that conveys the power of that moment in the church's history. And the illustrations are just absolutely gorgeous! I'll be using this with my congregation on Pentecost Sunday for our children's message, and will be treasuring it as part of my own collection of books.

I love Paraclete Press and their books for kids, and this is one of the best. It's a great way to get kids relating to the Holy Spirit (who for me as a kid was always a very nebulous, vague being). The book is well-written and dynamic, with just enough text to keep kids' attention. The illustrations are fabulous: they are colorful, active, dynamic -- all the things they should be when we're talking about the Holy Spirit! (Don't judge it by its cover -- the illustrations are way more detailed and intricate, full of life and dancing human figures and animals). Plus I love how children and women are included in the text/pictures as well. It's a great book, and one that I can't wait to share with my kids (thanks to Paraclete for the review copy).

A book with colorful art, that tells the story of Pentecost, the day when then the Holy Spirit descended upon the the 120 disciplesof Jesus of Nazareth, as recorded in Acts 2 in the Bible. A colorful gift for younger children...

I love this book! With beautiful words, illustrations, and colors, this book helps us tell the church's story in refreshing ways. I hope this book finds its way onto many bookshelves, coffee tables, desks, and playground benches. Even more, I hope that it finds its way into the hands of young and old saints who are eager to learn about the amazingly beautiful story of Pentecost!

As a pastor, you always look for ways to explain the great mysteries of faith to children. Now finally a book to explain Pentecost! What beautiful metaphors and words and illustrations to make the story come alive. Can't wait to share with the children in my life.
