I've gotten numerous children's missals over the years, and this is one of the best. I got it for my 5yo son, but my 7yo son is totally jealous, even though he has a pretty good one, too. He is always asking to look at his little brother’s book while we’re at Mass!This book is best for ages 4 (or younger) through about age 8 or 9.It's copyrighted 2004, but has been updated for the revised Roman Missal translation. (One detail they missed: it still refers to the Penitential Rite instead of the Penitential Act. Not one single child using this book will notice or care.)WHAT I LIKE BEST ABOUT THIS BOOK:Many of the illustrations show saints and angels above the altar and congregation during Mass. I tell my kids that at Mass, heaven comes to earth and we are singing with the angels, but I think having this illustration makes the concept more real to them than all the words in the world. (You can see an example right there on the cover.)There are cute little “church mice” throughout the book, which the kids love. On the page for the Penitential Rite, one of these mice is shown sadly remembering when he pulled another mouse’s tail—again, illustrating the concept effectively.My kids don't read the text. The 5yo can’t read yet, the 7yo is too obstinate to read it, and the 10yo thinks this book is for little kids (that’s because it is). But it was obviously written with a great love and reverence for the Mass, and one day (probably) at least one of them will read it, I’m sure.There are no pencil activities. This is important. I've tried books with things like boxes to draw a picture of your church family, or blanks to put in the names of people you want to pray for, etc.
