I highly recommend this book to people who have been trained as intentional interim ministers. The writers raise some very viable questions about how to best assist churches in the transitional process. I know there are those persons who have been trained in certain processes that get very nervous about discussing adaptability and flexibility in the tool kit of the interim minister. This book will raise some important questions for how we navigate the future in helping churches with the transitions they face.
This book has a number of good essays that cover everything from issues of transition, to transformation, to hospice care for dying congregations. Given the busy lives of pastors in this work, while the whole book has good information, it may not be realistic to sit down to read it all. Thus, it is very helpful that the essay titles clearly reflect the information they provide so that it is easy to pick and choose what one needs to read. There are essays that provide a big picture/lay of the land (the first, by Rev. David Sawyer comes to mind), as well as essays with some concrete steps for congregational engagement. Also, while it is a useful resource for private reading, I think it could become even more valuable if read among a group of pastors. The Reflection Questions at the end of each chapter provide a place to start a conversation in that setting that would be fruitful.
Excellent presentation of the new landscape of interim/transitional ministry today. Well worth my purchase.
Along with wonderful insights into "Church" today, this compilation of writings from experts in the field offers refreshing, practical ideas and process for revitalizing ministry.
