First, this is not a scholarly work on the Pastorals. Normally I get frustrated with books like this, because the author assumes that you agree with his interpretation and winds up presenting his take on the material as the only/best interpretation or application. However, I was much less frustrated with this book as Hughes seems more down to earth that similar writers.While Hughes assumes you agree with him with regard to interpretation, he didn't seem to me to throw that up in the reader's face when dealing with some of the more controversial passages of these books, namely the ones that limit women's service roles. Actually, I thought he did a good job dealing with that material, much better in fact than the scholarly book by Towner that I was reading along with this as a balance.If you are looking for something to give you ideas for sermon topics, information, anecdotes, and the like, then this book will be helpful. If you are looking for a book that will challenge you and your understanding of the Pastorals, you need to look somewhere else, or do what I did and get this and a scholarly work for both kinds of information.
Doctrine of grace is the gospel, and after using it, having it, I just realized that it is barely the surface....it's mainly head knowledge....after reading this book, I startto remember my first Love....my love of God....I began to scratch the surface of it's truth....the truth of the Gospel....

this is a great book and i highly recommend it to any serious Bible student, pastor or lay person who is interested in studying!
