Data-governance programs focus on authority and accountability for the management of data as a valued organizational asset. Data Governance should not be about command-and-control, yet at times could become invasive or threatening to the work, people and culture of an organization. Non-Invasive Data Governance™ focuses on formalizing existing accountability for the management of data and improving formal communications, protection, and quality efforts through effective stewarding of data resources. Non-Invasive Data Governance will provide you with a complete set of tools to help you deliver a successful data governance program. Learn how: Steward responsibilities can be identified and recognized, formalized, and engaged according to their existing responsibility rather than being assigned or handed to people as more work. Governance of information can be applied to existing policies, standard operating procedures, practices, and methodologies, rather than being introduced or emphasized as new processes or methods. Governance of information can support all data integration, risk management, business intelligence and master data management activities rather than imposing inconsistent rigor to these initiatives. A practical and non-threatening approach can be applied to governing information and promoting stewardship of data as a cross-organization asset. Best practices and key concepts of this non-threatening approach can be communicated effectively to leverage strengths and address opportunities to improve.

Executives within organizations are finally recognizing data as an asset as well as a potential liability. However, for many companies a large and involved data governance initiative is not practical or doable. Organizations need a way to implement data governance without disrupting the culture and incurring high costs. This book "Non-Invasive Data Governance™" (Seiner, 2014) makes a case for the trademarked term "Non-Invasive Data Governance". It outlines an approach for formalizing existing roles within the organization and leveraging existing processes that do not disrupt the culture or come with high price tags contrasted against more traditional data governance program approaches.I found this book to be written in an easy to read format in which I could easily connect with the authors thoughts and ideas. I read it in one sitting as that is how enjoyable it was. I feel the author laid out a great blueprint to follow for many organizations looking to install, expand or improve upon their current data and information governance capabilities.

Robert Seiner has been a great speaker on Data Governance for many years and I am glad that he finally put his thoughts together in a book form. Robert articulates very well from his extensive field experience and that fact should give confidence to the reader (at least it did for me having following his writings and webinars for years). The only fly in the ointment for me was him referring to "Non-invasive Data Governance" making you feel uncomfortable and think "maybe I need to look at other viewpoints...". Well his material is a great way to start and is comprehensive. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book to fellow data management practitioners.

This book is very well written, easy to follow, and offers a very realistic roadmap to quickly improve all things data for any organization. It can pay for itself in a matter of a few hours. Mr. Seiner describes very common challenges with regards to data governance and ways that each of these challenges have been alleviated.

Non-Invasive Data Governance by Robert S. Seiner (2014, Technics Publications, ISBN 978-1-835504-85-6) is an insightful book that offers a clear and practical approach for embracing data governance best practices by evolving existing data governance activities. The premise of the book, as Bob so aptly states early on, is that '(a)ll organizations already govern data. They may do it informally, sometimes inefficiently, often ineffectively, but they already govern data. And they all can do it better.'The book does a wonderful job of explaining the trademarked phrase that is at the heart of this book, 'non-invasive data governance,' as well as to guide the reader along the path of formalizing and improving existing data governance practices. The key, according to Seiner, is not to start from square one, but to build upon the data responsibilities that are already being performed within the organization.

Really great book with tons of helpful tips and tricks for setting up a data governance committee. Love all the concrete examples of documents and deliverables at the end--this is definitely my go-to reference guide when I'm looking for some information.
