I purchased this book because it was on the Catholic Mosaic Reading List. I am starting that program with my children. This book is published by Paulist Press, the publishing company of the Paulist Priests. I should expect better from them. It is interesting to note that some of the books on the Catholic Mosaic list are Protestant and actually more on the ball than this Catholic book.)Here's a summary of the book... It first talks about the moon, lighting the sky, guiding different animals, etc. After that, it talks about catching a moonbeam in your hand. Then it goes on to say that if everyone caught a moonbeam in their hand, "they would become linked together by holding onto the very same light." It would be a miracle since we would all know that we "are brothers and sisters in one human family." It's kind of the same idea of that Coke commercial from 1971, "I'd like to teach the world to sing."If one were Catholic homeschooling, I would hope that the children would have a better exposure to the fact that God created every single human person in His image and likeness than this book. It kind of just hints at it anyway. We are all linked by our Baptism and through the Eucharist, but that's too Catholic for this book, I guess. This book is just typical of the sing-song-y folk band type of Catholicism that has overtaken the Church today. If that's your preference, that's fine, but I do urge you to look at the numbers. See what types of parishes and priest and sister orders have increasing faith practicing and vocations and see which ones are on a downward spiral. If one was not Catholic and read this book, I really don't see how it would be explicitly Catholic and, um, offensive. Catholic books should be Catholic.I am giving it two stars instead of one because the illustrations are beautiful and I did not think this book to be an all out heresy.
A beautiful story to bring children (and adults) to an understanding of our interconnectedness.
I have always loved the moon. When I am far away from loved ones, I know we can both look at the moon at the same time and feel closer through this shared experience. This book sweetly shares that concept for children. It would be a miracle if children learned to bond with and treasure even children they have never met. We all need the peace this book suggests.
